Florida’s education chief said Friday that public schools should begin using the name “Lake America” for Lake Ontario immediately, following a presidential executive order that has left geography teachers holding last year’s textbooks like contraband.
A fourth-grade instructor in Alachua County said she supports patriotism but needs guidance on whether the Great Lakes are being rebranded individually or as a boxed set.
“I can laminate a new label,” she said. “I cannot laminate a new continent.”
A district spokesperson said maps would be updated “as soon as someone decides what Canada is called now.”
