SAN FRANCISCO — Anthropic said Saturday it would permanently raise weekly limits on Claude Code by 25 percent, a change that takes effect September 14 and is, compared with the limits users have this afternoon, a cut.
The company is currently running a temporary 50 percent boost. On September 14 that boost ends and a smaller one remains. Officials described the smaller one as a raise. A developer with a calculator described it as Thursday.
The first post came down. A second post went up and admitted the math: a 17 percent reduction versus today. The same post promised “exciting changes” that will make it feel like users are getting more, which is a new approach to less. A third post thanked everyone for hanging in there and asked what they were building this weekend.
What they are building this weekend, according to several people who paid for Max, is a spreadsheet.
An Anthropic spokesman said the new numbers were what the company could “sustainably serve going forward.” He did not say who had been unsustainably served up to now. He did say users would get more visibility into their usage, which will be useful when there is less of it.
A Pro subscriber in Austin refreshed the app until the original announcement disappeared. “They raised my limits,” he said, watching the 50 percent vanish from the calendar. “I feel it already.”
Asked whether 17 percent less would feel like more once the exciting changes arrived, the spokesman said he couldn’t wait to share them. He did not share them. The limits, sources said, still start September 14.
